Accent’s Young Musician of the Year Final

July 5, 2019

Seven talented musicians from Warrington and Halton came to St. Luke’s Parish Church in Farnworth on 23 May to compete for the title of Accent Young Musician of the Year 2019.

Our seven competitors, who enjoyed the opportunity to hear each other’s performances.

Sam Clayton (Saxophone), Ellie Harrison (Violin), Matthew Murphy (Clarinet), Sasha Nicol (Voice), Madgey Thompson (Trumpet), Olivia Warren (Trumpet) and Aaron Worthington (Piano) – all pictured above- were selected through an audition process to compete for the title, in which they had 10 minutes to impress the judges with their performances.

The adjudicators at the Final were Helen Francis, David Chatterton and Martyn Shaw, all Music Tutors from Chetham’s School of Music, based in Manchester City Centre. The seven competitors performed to an audience of friends, family and, in some cases, their own individual music teachers.

Chris Bastock, Progression Manager for Accent Music Education Hub organised the event and supported the students on the day. “We were overwhelmed with applicants for the first year of the competition, with the places being allocated to those performers who had both musical ability and performance presence. It was no surprise, then, that the evening was hugely entertaining, regardless of the competitive element. Each of the competitors gave performances that really showed their individual characters and strengths off to the fullest and the audience were treated to a huge range of styles, so really something for everyone to enjoy and appreciate.

“All seven performers really have shown what ability and talent the young musicians of our region have and we would like to congratulate them all on their success this evening”.

After a brief discussion, the adjudicators announced the winners; Third Place was awarded to Aaron Worthington (Piano), Second Place to Sasha Nicol (Voice) and the overall Winner was Madgey Thompson (Trumpet). All three musicians won an individual coaching sessions at Chetham’s, and Madgey was also invited to perform a solo at the Foden’s Family Concert, taking place on Sunday 30 June at Parr Hall, Warrington as part of Accent’s Ensembles Showcase weekend.

Winner Madgey Thompson with the Adjudicators from Chetham’s School of Music, (L-R) David Chatterton, Helen Francis, and Martyn Shaw.
