Halton & Warrington Music Support Service - HWMSS


Halton & Warrington Music Support Service are our main instrumental and vocal tuition delivery partner.  HWMSS is a music support service designed to fulfil the needs of music in education utilising the skills of a team of dedicated professional musicians and educators.

What does HWMSS offer?


HWMSS offers expertise in the field of instrumental/vocal teaching and ensemble provision across the Hub and is dedicated to always put the musical education needs of pupils first.


HWMSS works in partnership with over 90 schools and teaches over 3500 pupils each week. They are commissioned by the Accent Music Education Hub to deliver:

  • Whole Class Instrumental and Vocal Tuition

  • Replay – a follow-on large group instrumental activity for pupils wishing to continue beyond Whole Class Teaching.

  • Ensembles: Tutors from HWMSS lead the Halton Schools Wind Band, Accent Community Ensemble, Rising Stars Bands, Splinters Band and Splinters Street Band.

  • Play Days: Twice a year HWMSS brings pupils of all ages and abilities from across the Hub together to make music and perform in inspirational venues.

In addition to the teaching commissioned through the Accent MEH the Halton and Warrington Music Support Service also delivers:

  • Small Group and Individual teaching: Working with a wide range of schools to teach over 1200 pupils each week to play:

    • Brass - Trumpet, Cornet, French Horn, Tenor Horn, Baritone, Euphonium, Trombone and Tuba

    • Keyboard - Technology and technique

    • Guitar - Classical and Electric

    • Percussion - Drum kit, tuned percussion

    • Strings - Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

    • Vocal

    • Woodwind - Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone

  • After School Clubs and workshops

HWMSS Tutors


All of HWMSS’s tutors have a great deal of experience teaching pupils of all ages and abilities; from complete beginners through to preparing pupils for entry into music college and university.


In addition to being excellent teachers and communicators they are also highly trained and capable performers. Many tutors still perform professionally on a regular basis and the fusion of professional musician and performer ensures that pupils get a well-rounded musical education.

All their tutors are DBS checked and receive annual Safeguarding Training.
